Supplements and Miscarriage

Here's a brief overview of the research in this section:

Aspirin: was shown to be ineffective in improving the live birth rate in women with recurrent miscarriage.

Black Cohosh: No studies were found regarding black cohosh and miscarriage. However, black cohosh was found to improve the clinical pregnancy rate by 170% in women with unexplained fertility, and it was also found to increase progesterone levels.

Flaxseed: lowered miscarriage rate by 64% in cows, and boosted fertility in women. Flaxseed has also been shown to lengthen the luteal phase (by 1.2 days), increase progesterone, increase SHBG, and improve the estrogen ratio.

Inositol: No studies were found regarding inositol and miscarriage. However there are numerous studies that link inositol (both myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol) to improved fertility and ovulation. Inositol has also been shown to prevent spina bifida, improve insulin resistance, lower testosterone, and increase progesterone and SHBG.

N-Acetyl Cysteine: 600 mg/day of N-Acetyl Cysteine increased the chance of pregnancy continuing past 20 weeks by 290% in one study of women with unexplained recurrent miscarriage. Similarly, it reduced miscarriage odds by 60% in a study involving women with PCOS. N-Acetyl Cysteine has also been shown to increase fertility and protect the fetus from maternal inflammation.

Omega 3's: 5.1 g of DHA/EPA was shown to lower miscarriage odds to just 9% in women with antiphospholipid syndrome (this is lower than the risk expected for an average pregnancy). Omega 3's have also been shown to reduce insulin resistance (by as much as 60%) and inflammation.

Progesterone Creams: Supplemental progesterone, though not specifically progesterone cream, has been shown to improve the live birth rate in women with recurrent miscarriage, although there was only a small improvement in odds. 80 mg of progesterone cream have been shown to be as effective in increasing blood progesterone as a 200 mg oral progesterone prescription.

Vitex: No studies were found regarding vitex and miscarriage. However, vitex has been shown to improve fertility (by 160%), lengthen the luteal phase, normalize the menstrual cycle, increase progesterone, lower LH, lower prolactin, lower FSH, lower GnRH, and lower inflammation.
