Alice Meade of Kingston upon Thames, widow, 1648

In the name of God amen, I Alice Meade of Kingston upon Thames, in the county of Surrey, widow, being of perfect mind and memory, do this present eighth day of April, anno domino one thousand six hundred forty eight, and in the four and twentieth year of the reign of our sovereign lord Charles, by the grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland king, defender of the faith, etc., ordain and make this my present last will and testament as followeth, First I commend my soul into the hand of almighty God my heavenly father through the merit and mediation of his blessed son, my only saviour and redeemer Jesus Christ, by whose most precious death and bloodshed I faithfully believe that all my sins are pardoned and that after this mortal life ended it shall be made partaker of life eternal, and my body I commit to the earth to be buried in decent manner in the parish churchyard of Kingston aforesaid at the discretion hereafter named, there to rest in hope of a blessed resurrection to eternal happiness at the last day. And touching that portion of worldly substance wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me withal, I dispose thereof as followeth. Inprimis I give and give and bequeath to my daughter Alice Mead all my childbed linen. Item whereas there is a debt of three pounds owing to me by my sister Mary Moore, widow, I give the same to her children Richard, Walter, William and Elizabeth Moore, that is to say forty shillings thereof to the said Richard, Walter and William Moore, equally to be divided amongst them three, and twenty shillings residue thereof to the said Elizabeth Moore now living with my sister Mary Pembrooke of Kingston, widow, to be paid unto them within convenient time after the same shall and may be had and recovered of my said sister Mary Moore and not before. Item all my debts, goods, chattels, money, plate, household stuff and personal estate whatsoever not herein above bequeathed, my debts and legacies first paid and funeral charges discharged, I give and bequeath to my children John Mead, Thomas Mead and Alice Mead, equally to be divided amongst them. But my will and meaning is that my said son Thomas Mead shall have first five pounds for his share and part more than my said son John Mead, the same to be kept in the hands of my overseers for the putting forth of him the said Thomas to apprentice. And also that my said daughter Alice Mead shall have ten pounds for her share and part more than my said son John Mead, and then my said estate to be equally divided amongst them. Item I ordain and make the said Alice Mead sole executrix of this my will, and nominate and appoint Sackford Ounsonne, of Kingston aforesaid, gent, and Henry Dermit of Kingston aforesaid, yeoman, to be overseers hereof, to each of whom I give ten shillings apiece as a token of my live, desiring them to be aiding and assisting to my said executrix in the due execution of this my will, and to see that my goods and personal estate be equally divided amongst my said children as near as they can, my said son Thomas to have first five pounds and likewise the said Alice ten pounds for their share and part more than my son John Mead as above said. And so desiring the blessing of God upon my children and his mercy on my soul I end. And in testimony hereof I have to every leaf of this my will, being in number two, set my hand and seal the day and year first above written. The mark of the said Alice Mead. Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Alice Mead to be her last will and testament in the presence of Robert Rogers, John Phillips. The mark of Thomas Robinson.
