VCH Herts. 1578. Manor of Childwick, Cashio Hundred, formerly of St Albans Abbey. After the
suppression of the abbey it was held by William Cavendish and then by Thomas Rouse and his
son Nicholas and the daughters of Thomas. Nicholas died without heirs so the manor went to his
sisters Francis, Anne, Dorothy and Joan. Dorothy the wife of Edward Smith, Anne the wife of
Humphrey Meade and Francis the wife of William Preston sold their three parts in 1578 to
George Rotherham and William Toocke.
VCH Herts. 1579. Manor of Widbury, east of Ware. Gilbert Hill was in possession in 1579. He
received rents from The Bear, The Bull and other inns. He died in 1583, his son Richard then
being 4 years old. During Richard's minority his sisters Philippa the wife of Edward Meade and
Elizabeth the wife of Thomas Calvert held his Ware estate.
