Littleover Historical Society -September 2025
When I'm driving through a town or village, I'm always intrigued by lanes with unusual names. Many of these names have obvious historical connections, such as Pork Lane in Essex, Wibbley Wobbly Lane in Hertfordshire, Spanker Lane in Nether Heage, and Nannies Bottom Lane in Herts. I wonder what they refer to!
While some of these names might not be as amusing in Littleover, they certainly showcase a lot of name changes with clear historical links. For example, Shepherd Street was once called Dark Lane until Mr Shepherd trimmed some of the foliage. Church Street was originally Town Street, then changed to Sidney Road in reference to Sidney House at the bottom. Donkey Lane was renamed North Street, and Well Lane became Normanton Lane. The most obvious example is Black Groves, which used to mean Dark Trees, but has since been changed to Blagreaves Lane. New Road became Old Hall Road, and Lime Road, which once ran off Blagreaves Lane, led to lime pits.
12th September - we next meet at l0am at Littleover Grange Hall Community Centre, Park Lane. Visitors welcome, join us for a chat and refreshments, £3. Come along or contact:
