A new community centre opened a month ago on King George V Playing Fields. The centre, named King George V Community Centre, was the idea of Samer Jamous, with the help and support of NTC Derby. Under a lease from Derby City Council, Samer intends to manage the centre.
After the death of King George V in 1936, a National Memorial Fund and 'Grant in aid Trust' was set up to secure a living memorial in the way of playing fields to the late sovereign. There were many throughout the country.
The King George V Playing Fields in Littleover were officially opened in 1952 by Victor Cavendish. the Duke of Devonshire. Later in the year, gates were installed and these were officially opened by Sir Ian Walker. Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire. Trees were also planted by children from the Parish.
We have photos of the opening with Scouts and Guides mainly invited to the opening, courtesy of Littleover Grange Hall Community Centre. We will add a few to the website at a later date. You may recognise Parents or Grandparents, please let us know!
