Littleover water and wells

Our earnest wish for rain in May was rewarded towards the end of the month. This coincided with a water leak in my house and made me think more closely at how much water each household uses every day and how people in Littleover had to go to a great deal of effort in the past to gain their need for water.

Beneath Littleover there is a network of springs and wells, mostly now hidden, but not all people had access to these. In Littleover we know of one communal well which was located alongside what was then the Old Vicarage in what is now Normanton Lane. I wonder how many trips to the well you had to make in a day! I do get chance to read old documents from people who very kindly loan them to me, recently coming across, in a very old document of 1820, the intention of making sure the tenant kept the well on the property in good repair and also the condition that his daughter who lived adjacent to the tenement still had access to it echoes from the past, thank you for the information.
