Villages in Derbyshire continued to have part-time parish constables until the mid-1870s, even after Derbyshire County Police was formed in 1857. The Littleover Parish constable was responsible for maintaining order within the village. Constable Lane, previously known as Constable Field, was a two-acre piece of land that may have provided an early means of compensation for village constables. The duties of the village constable included keeping the peace, apprehending felons, making hue-and-cry, punishing idle persons (often by whipping or committing them to the stocks) tax collection, and executing warrants issued by the justice of the peace. (In A.B. Scott’s book, he locates the stocks at the junction of what was then New Road now Old Hall Road and Church Street, under a large Walnut tree)
