Littleover Historical Society January 2025
As we find ourselves at the beginning of a new year, we see Littleover continuing to expand. One of the most recent developments has now been completed in the former grounds of the fire station. Originally Littleover Old Hall, this has now been transformed into a new housing hub.
Once there were many farms in the area, most of them tenanted and being farmed by families. In most cases, we find the local businessmen of the time as having the monopoly of land. Elms Farm estate, situated on Burton Road, had expanded over time, from the 18th century to the early 1920's becoming one of these latest to be developed. The three storey farmhouse, wasn't demolished until 1927 when Constable Drive was developed. As the housing developer selectively sold off various plots, the builder often only built a small number of houses at a time, unlike the typical terraced housing before. When advertised in the thirties, it was worded to encourage business men and their families to purchase.
10th January - we next meet at l0am at Littleover Grange Hall Community Centre, Park Lane. Visitors £3, Members £1, including refreshments.
