The 100th Anniversary of the Great War, later known as the First World War was in 2014. As a local history society, the Littleover Historical Society has collaborated with Chris Drury a local author and lifelong member of the British Legion to commemorate this event in his new book "Littleover War Memorials - World War one and two, we shall remember them"
Littleover War memorial - St Peters Churchyard
In conjunction with Littleover Historical Society, St. Peter’s Church and The British Legion Littleover Branch and jointly we researched the lives of the soldiers who are remembered on the war memorial in the churchyard. We located where some of them had lived and devised a Gardens of Remembrance Trail.
In 1914, the population of Littleover was less than 1500 people. Over 250 men left to serve in the war, 37 of them died. Of the 200+ men who returned, life would never be the same for them or their families.
This trail marks the home of more than half of the men who gave their lives in this conflict. At the turn of the 20th century, few houses were numbered and it has been a challenge to reconcile the information available in the 1911 census, with a 21st century street map. We have done our best.
Further investigation is underway to identify those not included on the local war memorials
The fallen are remembered each year and wooden Remembrance Crosses are placed on the individual graves and memorials of the Servicemen who lost their lives in World War I and World War II. The crosses are placed each year in St. Peter’s Churchyard during the two-week period leading up to Remembrance Sunday. It must be noted that some of the Servicemen are buried in graves within the churchyard and others are remembered as memorials on the graves of other family members. ..........more
