Littleover Historical Society December 2024
As you take a look at today's ever-changing shops in Littleover, do you wonder why we need so many barbers and fast-food shops? A look into the past from 'Portrait of a Village' by Ian Griffiths, we are taken back to the early days of the 1900's when the village had only three shops: The Stores, owned by Mr North; The Sweet Shop owned by Mrs Simms, the window of which became a delight to the children at Christmas; and Sharp's General Store, a dingy shop with green canisters of tea sitting on the shelves. The village also had a Blacksmith, Mr Musgrove and many people were delighted to watch as the sparks would fly as he shod the horses in his leather apron. In those times, people would bake their bread at home and grow their own vegetables. If you were lucky enough to afford one, your Christmas poultry would come from a local farm, as would eggs and milk delivered to your door.
13th December - we next meet at l0am at Littleover Grange Hall Community Centre, Park Lane. Visitors £3, Members £l incl refreshments. Come along or contact: Jan 01332 348903 or jan.dante@virgin.net
