Littleover Historical Society February 2025
Littleover has often been described in the past as being a long straggling village, having shops dotted around the Half Moon in Burton Road down to The White Swan in Shepherd Street. Having come across an article entitled 'Jubilee History of Derby Cooperative Provident Society Ltd' dated 1850-1900, it was surprising to note that there was no mention of Littleover, despite the fact that it did mention and even had pictures of other surrounding areas/villages around Derby.
Littleover has a long standing connection to the Co-op. The first premises in 1877 were a corner shop with a bake house next door situated opposite the White Swan. In 1893, a new Co-op store was built on the corner of Burton Road, later becoming our local Library, and now Lymn's Funeral Parlour. The article did, however, mention William North as being one of the eldest members of the society. William North (1837-1916) was President and benefactor of Littleover Baptist Church, and also the Manager of Littleover Co-op.
