In 1841 Littleover boasted four public houses: The White Swan on Shepherd Street, believed to be more of an eating house and meeting place; The Plough Inn on Uttoxeter Road; and the Half Moon and Rising Sun on opposite sides of Burton Road. The Half Moon catered for overnight stays, and is recorded as having a large garden and bowling alley, and was noted for hosting auctions. The Plough Inn was situated on the Littleover boundary at Huffin Heath, as recorded in enumerator records. The order of recording was The Plough, then The Toll House followed by Chain Lane, with ample space between them, unlike today.
The Mercury described The Plough as a lively pub under various landlords. In 1824, Thomas Pyewell was fined £2 for allowing two cartmen to become incapacitated while delivering barrels. In 1857, William Greatorix was fined £1 for selling beer at 11:20 am during church services. Another landlord was accused of a punch-up with a local farmer. The pub was auctioned several times. Finally, in 1866, the old licensed pub, The Plough Inn, was auctioned again. It was described as having cowsheds, a stable, piggeries, and a house with two parlours, a bar kitchen, and five bedrooms. In 1881, the enumerator noted that the house designated as The Plough Public House was no longer licensed.
