Littleover Historical Society November News 2026
As we approach November, our month of remembrance, our thoughts are cast back to events that happened, maybe not in our lifetime, but of our close relatives. Have you ever wondered why we have so many allotments in Littleover?
Before, during and after WWII, there was a shortage of food so many people were allocated small plots of land to grow their own vegetables. There were 815,000 in Britain! The Ministry of Agriculture initiated a 'Digging for Victory' campaign and the number of allotments increased to 1.7 million in three years. Interestingly these remain today.
The need for fresh fruit and veg is as needed as ever. People even use allotments as a hobby nowadays, getting away from it all, a pride of achievement to grow your own, and a place to sit at the end of the day with a rewarding drink of whatever you fancy!!
13th November - join us at our next meeting at 10am at Littleover Grange Hall Community Centre, Park Lane (rear entrance). Visitors £3, members £1 incl. refreshments.
