Happy Fall! As the temperatures cool down, we’re enjoying what is left of boating season and looking back at all the great sailing we did this summer.
One of the highlights of LMYC’s season was the return of the Junior Sailing Program. Six young sailors completed the 3-week long program, successfully developing the skills to captain their own Sunfish. Each day included a review of what was previously learned, a chalk talk of new material, an on-land activity to drive understanding and onwater practice. The course wrapped up with a celebratory party and the signing of the students’ certification record booklets.
The curriculum included:
• Safety
• Parts of the Boat
• Rigging
• Steering with a Tiller
• Capsize Recovery
• Man Overboard Recovery
• Points of Sail
• Docking
• Getting Out of Irons
• Tacking & Upwind Sailing
• Jibing & Downwind Sailing
• Rules of the Road
• Knots
The goal of this program is not only to learn to sail, but to instill a sense of independence and confidence, teamwork and responsibility, and a love for the water into the next generation of LMCC members.
