October 2001 Papoose Article

Post date: Jul 31, 2008 1:14:35 AM

This article is being composed on September 12, 2001 in the wake of the devastating events of the preceding day. A little more than a week before and in sharp contrast to what would follow, we sailed and celebrated. On Sunday, September 2nd our last open regatta for the season, the Commodore's Cup Regatta was held. Six Lightnings, two Snipes and an American 14 raced with the top three finishing as follows:

First Place

Skipper: Jeff Urbanski (Snipe)

Crew: Gregory Urbanski

Second Place

Skipper: John Marx (Snipe)

Third Place

Skipper: Don Okner (Lightning)

Crew: Jim McMahon and Silke Oberdorf

Following the race, Commodore Ditti Holbein hosted a well attended and fun party at her home. Among the guests were former members Bob and Caroline Watters as well as their daughter and son-in-law. Bob, a Commodore Emeritus, had sailed John Marx's Lightning, Ariba Ariba Andale in the regatta. Walter Holbein was given special recognition for volunteering his time and efforts in the Junior Sailing School.

We still have a few important events upcoming this season. The Annual Meeting will be held on October 14 in the Papoose Room of the LMCC and our awards brunch will be on Sunday, November 18, 2001.

Race Official assignments are posted on the bulletin board outside of the buoy room. Please contact Don Okner, Race Committee at 729-5794 if you need to reschedule. The assignments for the month of October are as follows:

October 07, 2001: Bill Batchelor
