As reported in last month’s Papoose, our annual Awards Brunch took place on November 18, 2001. The results of the Fall Series and Fleet Championships were published in the December Papoose and this month we announce the recipients of the all important special awards.

This year’s Most Improved Skipper is Monika Holbein. Monika has sailed on the lake as crew and participated in our Junior program. She has now has come into her own as a Lightning skipper. Sailing Meister Eder, along with her crew, brother Walter and friend Joe, she took second place in the Spring Series.

The John Myers Service Award was presented to Perry Anderson for his devotion and attention to all matters pertaining to the Lake Mohawk Yacht Club, especially the Junior Sailing program. Perry also managed to take second place for the Lightning Fall Series and second place overall in that fleet. He proudly sails his new Lightning “M”.

Silke Oberdorf, who has completed her second season on Tomato Sloop, was properly awarded the honor of Crew of the Year. She faithfully travels every Sunday to sail with us and always keeps her cheerful disposition—even during a capsize.

The Ed Syracuse Memorial Sportsmanship Trophy went to Jack Robertson. Jack, who sails a Puffer in our cruising fleet, is always ready and eager to sail or assist wherever needed. He clearly demonstrates his love of the sport of sailing.

Last but not least, there was that famous Hard Luck Award which was presented to Bill Batchelor who lost a center board in a capsize. Turtles also went to the skippers and crew who "earned" them.

Congratulations and thanks to all who received special awards! Also, thanks to Madeleine Okner for organizing our brunch, to Larry and the staff at the Country Club for the good food and to Rich and Gail Miner for selecting terrific trophies.

Remember, sailing resumes in May. In the meantime, visit our web site at: www.lakemohawksailing.org for up to date information. You can Email us at: info@lakemohawksailing.org.

Until next month, smooth sailing and God Bless America!
