The Lake Mohawk Yacht Club has commenced its activities for the 2001 season. Following a board meeting in March at the home of Commodore Ditti Holbein, we began with the unwelcome, but always needed Spring Clean-Up on April 21, after which we adjourned to the Mohawk Room of the LMCC for our first social event of the year, the Prep Signal Dinner.

Sailing activities will commence on Sunday, May 6 with the first gun (we use an air horn) at 1:00PM. On the following weekend, racing will be held on Saturday, May 12. This is the only Saturday race day because Sunday, May 13 is Mother’s Day. Thereafter, all races will be on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM from May 20 through Oct. 7. There are twelve race days in both the Spring and Fall series with a potential of twenty four races in each series. Remember, you must sail 50% of the races actually raced in order to qualify, so “be there or be square.”

The Gabor Cup Regatta, sponsored by the Lightning Fleet, will be held on May 27. This is a handicapped event open to all LMCC members with a sailboat of any kind. You need not be a member of the Yacht Club to participate. If you have never raced you sailboat and want to give it a try, come down and join us. Sign up will be a 12:00 Noon followed by a Skippers Meeting and the first gun at (you guessed it) 1:00 PM.

This year, we look forward to some new faces, old faces and return of familiar ones. Among those who have returned are Monika and Walter Holbein who promise to have Meister Eider under way. The Lightning Fleet welcomes them . They will be in competition with their mother, Ditti, who will be crewing for Hank Jelinek. Long time member Clint Smith will be leaving us as he is retiring to Nevada. We will miss the Smith/Robertson duo in Birdie. Best wishes Clint.

We are planning our Annual Family Picnic which will coincide with the LMCC’s July Fourth celebration. Details will appear in the June Papoose. Other upcoming events to remember are regattas on May 27, July 1 and Sept 2. Board meetings will be held at 7:00 PM on May 20, June 24, July 22, Aug. 19 and Sept. 16. The annual meeting will be held on October 14 in the Papoose Room of the LMCC and our awards brunch will be on Sunday, November 18, 2001.
