September 2001 Papoose Article

Post date: Jul 31, 2008 12:44:27 AM

This month's article begins with an errata (not buried in some obscure place as is the norm in most newspapers) concerning the Marine Base Regatta held on July 1. Rich Miner and crew were first but the race was not abandoned after they crossed the line. Following him was one of our new members, John Rice with his crew, who came in second. The other boats did not cross the line and were all scored as tied for third place. Congratulations to those who finished, raced and again to John Marx, the race official.

We also welcome more new members to our club. Richard and Nina Frye and family, Mark Marrusich, and John and Mary Ann Rice have all joined for the 2001 season. We hope that they will find sailing and socializing with our club exciting and fun. And speaking of socializing, thanks go to Rich and Gail Miner for hosting a Lightning Fleet cookout at their beautiful home on August 5, 2001.

Our Spring series ended on July 22, 2001 and the Fall Series began on July 29, 2001. The results for the Lightnings for the Spring series are as follows:

The Juniors Sailing School ended on August 2, 2001 with a spectacular event. The fourteen students, ably instructed by Gary Oeters and his assistant Lorraine Oeters, sailed three Lightnings graciously provided by Perry Anderson, Ditti Holbein and John Marx. It was a terrific day with a good wind that provided for some great spinnaker reaches. Gary has also been providing sailing instructions to six adults on Saturday mornings.

Please remember our last open regatta for the season, the Commodore's Cup, on Sept 2 followed by the Commodore's Party. A final board meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Sept. 16 and the Annual Meeting will be held on October 14 in the Papoose Room of the LMCC and our awards brunch will be on Sunday, November 18, 2001.

Race Official assignments are posted on the bulletin board outside of the buoy room. Please contact Don Okner, Race Committee at 729-5794 if you need to reschedule. The assignments for the month of September are as follows:

Sept. 2 Bob Graham

Sept. 9 Don Okner
