Lake Mohawk Yacht Club - Summer Sailing Program Is Back!

We are making plans for our popular summer sailing program which is entering its 7th year in 2002. This year we are planning to have two sailing programs: a beginning program which teaches the basics of sailing and seamanship to young people ages 10 through 14; and an advanced program which will take students through age 18 who know how to sail but want to learn advanced techniques and racing tactics. We also plan to offer adult sailing classes for people over age 18 who want to pick up the basics of this great sport. All programs are for Lake Mohawk Country Club members and their families.

Basic Sailing

This program will run for 6 weeks this summer, starting June 24th and ending August 1st. Classes will be held three days a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will have two separate sections, one in the morning from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and one in the afternoon from 1:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students may register for either section since both will offer the same curriculum. The charge per student is still only $250.

Advanced Sailing

This program will also run for 6 weeks, starting June 26th and ending August 2nd. Classes will be held two days a week, on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be only one section and we will need a minimum of 6 students to enroll. So if you are interested, please call without delay so we can judge whether we will have enough interest to run this program. The charge for this program is only $195. Call Perry Anderson at 973-729-3904 or Gail or Rich Miner at 973-729-5283.

Adult Sailing

This program will be flexible to meet the time restraints and skill levels of the students. Classes will be held on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday mornings and will typically include 3 to 6 classes depending on the needs of the students. The price will also be flexible depending on the number of students and classes taken. Last year’s students paid $75 for three full morning classes with between 2 to 5 students per class.

All of the programs include instruction on our Club-owned Sunfish class boats, and for the Advanced and Adult classes we will also train on our larger sloops, the Snipe and Lido 14. Once again this summer we are privileged to have our terrific team of instructors returning to teach, led by Head Instructor Gary Oeters. Gary is a U.S. Sailing certified instructor, and he has waterfront safety training as well. He will be ably assisted by his sister, Lorraine Oeters, and by Walter Holbein. Lorraine and Walter are experienced sailors who, like Gary, also race with other members of the Lake Mohawk Yacht Club on Sunday afternoons. They are enthusiastic, knowledgeable, helpful and eager to get out on the water with you this summer to teach you the sport they love.

Here are some pictures of last summer’s program to give you a taste for what’s in store if you sign up!
