October 2020 Papoose Article

Our racing for 2020 is nearly ended, impacted but not defeated by COVID-19. On August 9, one Lightning skippered by Rich Miner was joined on the course by Tim and Chris Mackey going head-to-head in Snipes. Hank Jelinek was race official. The wind was S/W about 7 to 9 kts with beautiful sunshine as Rich led the way in his Lightning. Tim got off the start line ahead of Chris but father and son were together for most of the 2 lap course. It was tight to the end with both on starboard tack during the last leg. Tim was downwind as he headed up Chris numerous times to finish about 1 boat length ahead of son, Chris. Not quite a photo finish but exciting, nonetheless.

Race two began about the same as the first with Rich in first position and the Mackeys close throughout the first leg. On the second upwind leg Tim’s Snipe went over and turtled. The dagger board went into the upturned hull but, because the boat was properly rigged, the dagger board was retrieved. Using the dagger board as a lever the boat was righted and Tim was able to sail it back to the dock without assistance. All’s well that ends well!

Our club has welcomed new members and, although level one of the Junior Sailing School could not be held due to COVID-19, levels two and three took place as did private lessons for adults. Much of the credit for keeping these programs together goes to Perry Anderson, to whom we extend our sincere appreciation.

Remember, the LMYC is open to any LMCC members who are interested in sailing. Therefore, plan to join us. For more information, you can visit us on the web at www.lakemohawksailing.org . Also, you can email us at lakemohawksailing@gmail.com, or write us in care of PO Box 29, Sparta, NJ.

Until next month, smooth sailing and God bless America!
