May 2013 Papoose Article

Post date: Apr 28, 2013 6:53:41 PM

We began our 2013 activities with our Clean Up followed by the Prep Signal Party and will continue to make ready for sailing by raising our masts and celebrating with a Cinco de Mayo Party on May 4. Racing begins on May 19. Our first open regatta, the Gabor Cup Regatta will now be held on Sunday, June 9. Our regattas are open to all Lake Mohawk Country Club members with sailboats of any kind. Scoring is handicapped using the Portsmouth Yardstick. Therefore, a Sunfish can beat a Lightning. Why not consider joining us for the race? You just may get hooked on sailing.

Here are the dates to note for May and the months that follow:

• Mast Raising and Cinco de Mayo Party– May 4

• First Day of Racing – May 19

• Gabor Cup Regatta and Makani Party – June 9

• Independence Day Family Party – TBD (to coincide with the LMCC fireworks display)

• Marine Base Regatta – July 7

• Mutiny Regatta – July 27

• Jack Robertson Day – August 10

• Commodore’s Cup Regatta and Party – September 1

• Finish Line Party – October 26

• Awards Banquet – December 1

Please also make note of the announcements in the Papoose for our Junior Sailing School. The sailing school is extremely popular and enrollment is limited. We also will be offering adult and individual sailing lessons for those who are interested. And, if you are looking for great gifts for a sailor or for yourself, you can order great shirts and gear with our logo through the club. Also, to help raise funds for the Junior Sailing Program, Haley Chute had bags made from sails. They are available at Cathy Chute's Lake Mohawk Flower Shop in the plaza.

Also note that we are always in need of good crew members. If you don't have a boat but want to sail, crewing presents the ideal opportunity. Come down on a Sunday afternoon and talk to any of our skippers.

You can visit us on the web at www.lakemohawksailing.org. For more information about membership in the LMYC or, if you want to learn to sail, just call our Vice Commodore, Perry Anderson at (973)729-3904, email us at lakemohawksailing@gmail.com or write to us care of PO Box 29, Sparta, NJ 07871.

Until next month, smooth sailing

and God bless America!
