The Lake Mohawk Yacht Club welcomes new family members Kate Fresso and her son Archie. They have a Sunfish, and Archie is planning on taking Junior Sailing lessons. We also welcome returning members Alex and Birgit Fox. They have lived in Miami, Florida since 2014 while Birgit earned a BSN and a multi-state nursing license. She had been working in the ICU in Miami during the COVID crisis and is now working in an ICU at Princeton Hospital. She hopes to get a position closer to Sparta in the Fall.

While in Miami, they became members of the Coconut Grove Sailing Club. Alex completed all U.S. Sailing student certifications through Bareboat Cruising and became a yacht broker with Massey Yacht Sales. He earned his U.S. Sailing certification as a keelboat instructor and has taught over a hundred students in group classes and private coaching sessions at CGSC. In December, they moved back to their house on Log Cabin Terrace. They are happy to be back in Sparta and look forward to a great sailing season on the lake!

The LMYC was able to launch its sailboat racing schedule on May 23, with matched Lightning races. Perry Anderson and crew Margaret Anderson and Shirley Miller went head to head against Rich Miner with crew Gail and Birgit Fox. John Miller served as Race Official and set a triangular course with the weather mark near Echo Island. The wind was 8 to 11 mph out of the Northwest with higher gusts and many shifts, making for challenging sailing. Both Lightnings started on port tack which was favored in the first race. The Miner boat was inside and ahead and there was a tacking duel on the first beat, but the Miners went on to the win the race. In the second race, the Miner team tried to start on port tack again, but had to duck the stern of the starboard Anderson boat. When the Miners hardened up to a close haul, they were pointing almost directly at the weather mark, on the favored port tack, and were able to take an early lead and win the second race. Racing was canceled on May 30, due to the cold, wet weather.
