The Lake Mohawk Yacht Club wrapped up a very good 2024 season, thanks to outgoing Commodore Joe Fleming and our Board of Trustees. We were able to sail all our special regattas: the Gabor Cup Regatta in June, the Marine Base Regatta in July, and the Commodore’s Cup Regatta in September. These special regattas are open to all members of the LMCC. We were also able to sail our regular Sunday races with many active sailors participating. In our races we have been starting all the sailors at the same time and using a handicap scoring system to determine the placements.
We were able to conduct our popular Junior Sailing program again last Summer, headed by Kristina Genovese and assisted by McKaela and Shealyn Reekie. We aim primarily for 10 to 14-year-olds in the Junior Sailing program. Kristina is already planning for Junior Sailing classes in 2025, and a more detailed description of her plans will appear later. We made improvements to the Yacht Club property last fall by adding a fence and a gate to more fully secure the Club. Work was done to paint the boat hoists, with another coat planned for this Spring. To get ready for winter, the ice bubblers for our fixed docks were installed by John Trela, Jon Hirschey and Alex Fox.
The LMYC has started to make plans for our 2025 season which will include our sailing races and regattas, a racing rules presentation, junior and adult sailing lessons, our 4th of July Fireworks party, a Jimmy Buffett Party, weekday Sail and Dine Parties, and possibly a music fest. The Yacht Club owns about nine Sunfish and five Snipes which may be sailed by LMYC members, who have been checked out on the particular type of sailboat. The rest of the sailboats are privately owned by LMYC members. The members sail Lightnings, Snipes, Lasers, Sunfish and a Hobie Wave.
The Yacht Club welcomes new members from the Lake Mohawk community who want to sail or learn to sail. To join the Yacht Club is easy – all information is on our website: www.LakeMohawkSailing.org, thanks to our webmaster Ian Oldridge. Watch that site, and the LMCC Facebook page for more information on our 2025 season, such as the Spring cleanup date, the start of the racing season and the dates for Junior Sailing.
