April 2024 Papoose Article

Spring is here and activity at the yacht club picks up. Boats are unwrapped from their winter sleep. Last minute repairs are made on the racing boats prior to sailing season. Like the beaches, we have our spring cleanup which involves setting up our piers and cleaning up our waterfront. And it’s nice to see everyone and get reacquainted with what happened over the winter.

The Lake Mohawk Yacht Club has been a part of the lake since the beginning of our community. The Lake Mohawk Yacht Club was organized and started by the founder of our community Arthur Crane as a yacht club on unbuildable waterfront lots back in 1928. The founder of our community Arthur Crane was an avid Snipe sailboat racer. In several years the yacht club will be 100 years old!

As commodore of the Yacht Club, I’m proud to share that we have terrific participation from our membership in holding the traditions of yacht club from over the club’s history. As I travel around the community, I’ll spot yacht club sailing event trophies from 20, 30 or 40 years ago on people’s shelves and walls. If anyone has pictures or stories from years gone by at the Yacht Club, we would love to hear from you.

As a private club on Lake Mohawk, we invite people from the community to come out and join us on race day at the club. There are always skippers looking for racing crew. We have events during the summer to help introduce people to sailing and the yacht club. Our racing season runs from May until October. For those of us that do not live directly on the lakefront, yacht club membership provides waterfront access to the lake. We’re excited to offer the Junior Sailing Program once again from the summer of 2024 (dates and times to be announced soon) for all LMCC members. For more information or to sign up, please contact lakemohawksailing@gmail.com.
