SELF-PORTRAIT TOOLBAR PROJECT

These first assignments dealS with visual composition. You will learn how the Principles of Design play an important role in creating composition. You will also learn technical skills in using a scanner to input imagery into the computer and how to use PhotoShop software to manipulate those images. You will be creating a still life self-portrait by arranging personal objects on the scanner bed as well as taking photos of those personal objects. These objects must represent you and are interesting for their visual form rather than their function.

STILL IMAGE SCANS AND PHOTOGRAPHS

Raw Scan (one shot deal): Use the glass cut to the size of your scanner bed

Remember that the items against the glass (thus on the bottom of the pile) will end up being in the foreground of the image because we will be seeing it as the scanner sees it. Place objects on the glass and then layer with another piece of glass to create dimension. It is a good idea to make a few different compositions and then chose your best for the critique. Rarely is your first effort your best. as a place to compose an image that investigates some of the elements and principles of design. You will collect items and arrange them on the scanner in a way that indicates an understanding of symmetrical and asymmetrical compositions, with unity, focal points, rhythms, etc…. this is harder than it sounds.

Photos: Take photos of these images well. Include images of yourself for future manipulation.

The In-Motion Scan consists of moving an object while it is scanning. Move the objects as the light passes under the objects. You may take multiple scans using the same composition as the raw scan, but move the object as the light passes under the objects.

For the second part of the project you will utilize the individual scans and photographs and manipulate them in PhotoShop to create compositions that represents you as well as indicates an understanding of the principles of design. You should begin with one original scan or photograph and then choose objects from 5 other original scan or photographs and place them within the first. All images within this piece should come from your own original work. You should continue to develop the principle of art while you weave the added objects throughout the piece. You should exhibit control over the techniques you are being taught in class and be able to identify what compositions you are creating and how to control them.

Use the tools that you have been working with in previous projects which include the marquee tool, burn, dodge and blur tools. The magic wand, Magnetic lasso, clone stamp, and layer mask. Be selective on the filter you may use to avoid cliches. Finally, make color adjustments in image adjustments on your menu bar.

  • Your Non Traditional self-portrait must show a principle of design.
  • It must contain a minimum of five (5) images and they must be all original.
  • The final image must combine photos and scans.
  • You must show elements of weaving (over, under, over, under, etc… )
  • It must represent who you are in your heart. It will help if you show at least a part of your face.
  • Don’t make it look like a collage, make the object work together to create one cohesive piece.
  • It can include typography
