CINEMAGRAPH

  • This is a living moment in an otherwise still photograph. They are part still picture & part video making the image last forever.
  • They are a small gif (Graphics Interchange Format) and take up very little memory.
    • The best images have both something moving that shouldn't be and something that should be moving, but isn't...
    • For the OMG effect when someone notices the movement in what at first glance is a still picture.
      • The cinemagraph movement began in the 80's but were very jumpy and cliché
    • Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg reinvented them in 2011 to create more advance cinemagraphs.
      • They live and work in New York City creating photography, video and cinemagraphs for fashion and commercial campaigns as well as publishing work on their own site, Ann Street Studio

How do I start?

• You need A camera that can shoot video. Set the video to HD

• A tripod that will allow you to capture a still video. The only thing moving is the object that is creating a loop.

• Ideas for scenes to make into a cinemagraph! What are you capturing creates a loop.

•A model and/or whatever propsneeded

•Adobe Photoshop

And did I say, the video must create a loop.

Remember that you need two actions...

• One that you are going to loop so that it appears to be a continuous action forever...

• One that will end up staying perfectly still but your brain says, "Hey, that should be moving! How did they do that?"

Once a video is captured, (15 seconds is good)

    • Transfer video to jump drive in Cinamagraph folder
    • File, Import, video Frames to Layers
    • Animation pain will open along with the layers in the layer pallet
    • Run through your video to find a section that will create a workable loop.
    • delete frames that will not work. The image of the helicopter had over 300 frames which was eventually cut down to 15 frames.
    • Make sure your frames match your layers by clicking on the frame and matching the layer by noticing the eye is on.
  • Once the frames match, decide which image will be the top layer. Make a copy, place it at the top and rename it.
  • Reveal what you want to move by placing a layer mask on the top layer and painting away the space you want to move.
    • MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON THE MASK!
  • Save the image "for web"
    • loop forever
  • have fun
