HUE, VALUE, INTENSITY

Objectives:

1. Students will learn to recognize the elements of color theory.

2. They will develop technical skills in watercolor painting and experiment with different techniques which include wet on wet, dry brush, watercolor wash, and resist techniques which include rubber cement, crayon and frisket.

3. Student will be able to Identify artists who utilize color theory techniques within their paintings.

4. Students will recognize color blindness and reinforce parts of the human eye.5. Students will Compare and contrast negative and positive space6. Students will Utilize and recognize inspiration from their contour line drawings

Motivational Procedures:

  • Students will learn about color theory through the "Art Talk" chapter on Hue, Value and Intensity, Pages 136 – 143. Complete Worksheets and exercises.
  • Watch "Ted Talk" on what is color, how we see color and the effect of color.

4. Student discussion of presented artwork and in the PowerPoint presentation. Students will have a worksheet to complete technical information on Color Theory of Georgia O'Keeffe, Henri Matisse and Vincent Van Gogh's artwork.

Materials: PowerPoint, PowerPoint color theory worksheet, computer, "Art Talk"

5. Demonstrate watercolor technique of wet on wet and wash: Students will practice creating graded wash, flat wash, salt, resist (frisket), and lifting off techniques. They will also practice creating tints, tones and shades using watercolor.

Materials: Color theory worksheet, water, watercolor paints, newspaper, paint brushes.

6. Students will transfer favorite successful contour to watercolor surface using tracing paper.

7. Select choice of theory: warm vs cold colors, complimentary colors or primary vs secondary. Positive space vs Negative space.

Materials: Watercolor, tracing paper, brushes, newspaper, paper towel, 12x14 watercolor paper.
