ILLUSION OF DEPTH AND ART NOUVEAU

OBJECTIVES: Students will learn to:

1. Identify the Art Nouveau Style and utilize personal contour line drawings to create a composition in the Art Nouveau Style. (Try Serrealism)

2. Create the illusion of depth within a composition by overlapping objects, changing size, considering placement, using converging lines, and developing color and details.

3. Use science inspiration for decorative patterning and understand how artist are inspired.

4. Generate multiple ideas for their work of art.

Motivation:

1. Select 3-5 original contour line drawings completed the following week

2. Organize them into an interesting composition that is an indoor or outdoor scene. Organize them by varying the size and position that will develop space within your piece. Remember, it is your creative process, make it fun.

3. Remember the components for creating depth: (see PowerPoint slides)

a. manipulate the size. Objects get smaller as they move back into the distance,

b. placement: Objects on the ground move higher on the picture plane

c. overlapping: Objects in front cover objects that are behind them and are farther away

d. Color and details: Color is brighter and detail is crisper when closer to the foreground

* Color is duller and detail is blurrier when farther into the background.

e. Converging lines. Lines move to vanishing point as they move into the distance

4. Use the thumbnail sketch in order to organize your ideas. Remember they are sketches, not to be copied for your final piece.

5. To move your original contour images

a. Use Tracing paper to keep it the same size

b. Use transparency and an overhead to enlarge

c. Inform me of the size and object that you want reduced prior to when you need it.

ART NOUVEAU

1. Consider color and detail of your selected objects. Limit the colors you choose and this will help you achieve unity.

* Color is brighter and detail is crisper when closer to the foreground

* Color is duller and detail is blurrier when farther into the background.

2. Be inspired by the Art Nouveau style by finding patterns in science and medicine to be used in your final composition.

3. Each area should reflect the art nouveau style. (see PowerPoint slides)
