REFLECTIONS &

THROUGH THE GLASS

When taking photos through the glass or reflections, there are techniques you can use to take better photos.

It's common to take pictures through a window from your hotel room, on the bus, in the car or on a plane, or anywhere you may find yourself. But too often reflections are visible in your images.

What do you do when taking pictures through glass?

THROUGH THE GLASS

  1. Dim the lights
  2. Get close to the surface in order to avoid capturing dirt or smudges that could be on the glass.
  3. Try to shoot straight at the surface – reflections crop up when shooting at an angle
  4. Get parallel to the glass or rest the front of your lens hood on the glass and shoot with the camera back as parallel as possible to the surface of the glass. Check your images carefully, especially if the animal is not right in front of you.
  5. Shade the lens. Wrap a piece of dark cloth around the front of your lens which will minimize reflections. Watch closely when shooting at an angle , reflections can’t be helped but they can be minimized.

REFLECTIONS

Reflections are like visual illusions. They turn the world upside down, add a hint of confusion to a scene, and show us things we can’t immediately see the source of.

  1. Consider your subject and what it is being reflected. Also, where is the reflection coming from? A statue, a mirror, water, a building, etc.
  2. Change your angle, make sure you don't show up in the reflection unless that is what you intended.
  3. Consider composition use Rule of thirds or frame your shot.
  4. Fill the frame
