Abstract

English poetry is an integral part of the study of English literature in the Indian undergraduate classes but the prescribed poets are handled by the faculties heavily depending on the lecture method preparing the learner for the memory tests. The learners follow ways like mugging up the notes by the teachers or the ready answers available. The assessors of the answers are sure that they are thrice removed from reality, still they allot moderate marks. As a result the Classes of English literature are losing their charm and the learners are showing their backs. Internet, the easily accessible source for both the learners is pushing the learners further into parrot like learning. Now it is time to train the learners in the judicious and innovative application of the web. Through this paper the researcher has tried to share his creative use of internet to make his learners pursue the study of English poetry with passion.

English Poetry, with the objective of developing the emotional quotient and creativity of the learner is the part and parcel of the UGC model curriculum for English literature. The learner pursues it as a minor form at the entry level and major form in the subsequent stages. The comprehension of the study is tested in the form of critical appreciation. Digests, bazaar notes and the antique notes with the teachers have already damaged the pleasurable learning of English poetry and now the Easy web material a click away for both the teachers and learners is further killing the creative learning. Taking into consideration the both positive and negative sides of the web the researcher has used the wired world source creatively to enhance the appreciation of the English poems and study them in depth. The objective of this paper is to share his innovative application of the ICTs with the creative souls.

Present pedagogy practiced

An enthusiastic teacher, (forgetting the statement, he is the best teacher who teaches less!) of English literature overenthusiastically provides literally everything: summary in mother tongue, readymade answers, possible questions etc, killing the curiosity and the creativity of the learners. As a result, the discipline is losing its charm without the involvement of the learners. Hence, BBC Teaching English of the British Council inviting and publishing the blogs on the topic: Have BA and MA literature courses lost their charm in India? is an acknowledgement to the stagnated situation.

The teaching process of English at the Indian English literature classes fully colonial in its approach is still carried out by the teachers who are mostly untrained, following the pedagogy of their teachers. They display their scholarship of information regarding the personal and literary career of the poet and the summary of the poem. Then they go for the readymade answers to match the model questions making everything easy for the learners. They do a lot of harm instead of creating the pleasurable experience. Instead of appreciation they go for the analysis, the post mortem of the poem with the very old and worn-out techniques. The bazaar notes are literally the Bibles for the learners. The subject which should be the part of the learner’s life is forgotten the moment the written exams are over. Of course there are some committed and creative faculties struggling to make the learning process interesting.

Challenges in teaching poetry in Indian classes

The faculties are fully qualified which necessarily doesn’t mean that they have passion for the subject. It is their source of livelihood so most of the lethargic faculties are busy in covering the syllabus and creating the degree holders of English literatures sans passion for the subject. The pedagogy mentioned above is commonly practiced and examination preparation is done neglecting the very objectives. The study of poetry stagnates at remembering the contents of the poem. Reciting the poem in its expected style, interpreting the meaning of the poem and the poets philosophy, understanding the creative language of the poet and motivating the learners feel like composing their own lines is a challenge for the faculty.

Resourceful Internet

In the information and technologically revolutionized world the net has made the learning easy and effective (If used judiciously and innovatively). The texts their paraphrase, summary, the recitation, critical interpretations and activity based learning, essays, and papers, different evaluation techniques , and the power point presentations are available to strengthen the study.

An experiment of Innovative application of Internet

Yesh Pal in his UGC Golden Jubilee lecture Series says that Internet works better for those who are already engaged with something. For the committed teachers struggling to make the process of learning English poetry fully pleasurable and effective, internet is the Aladdin’s cave. The researcher himself has no English medium schooling background. He has the responsibility of facilitating the heterogeneous undergraduate class with learners from different educational background. He felt frustrated at his failure in making his learners pursue the study of English poetry independently with pleasure and passion. His college library housing a good stock of reference and providing the web source was very instrumental. For example the downloaded recitation of the poems like The Deserted Village motivated the learners to study English poetry differently. They tried other poems and went for the enjoyment. The images showing the physical and social background of the poem and the images of Indian villages under the similar impact of SEZs enhanced the interest of the learners. The quizzes on the site were studied for evaluation but the learners were motivated to prepare fresh quiz and play it. Instead of mere downloading and remembering, everything is studied from different angles. The learners were made to interpret the poem differently after referring interpretations from the web. Totally the web is applied to enjoy the poems rather than down and remember.

The outcome

The students were made the part of the process of learning poetry passionately .Many passionate learners have excelled in recitation and the interpretation of the poem successfully winning prizes in the poetry recitation activities on the campus. The participative learning improved the class attendance. Even the learner having education in regional language could compose poems in English and publish in the college annual. The performance in the written examinations improved and the creativity has brought jobs for these learners even at the international schools.

On the anvil

The efforts are not hundred percent successful so the frustration is leading to the further innovations. The researcher to avoid stagnation usually finds the innovative application every time. For the learner’s full utilization of the ICTs he is planning to start cooperative learning by forming the groups of the learners with the right combination of the learners accessing and not accessing the internet to make the learning inclusive. Totally, he finds no limit in the creative application of the internet in getting the job satisfaction.

Dhanappa (2012) the study of literature in general and the English literature in particular are not on the right track. The very aim of the study is neglected and the commercial approach is accepted so the generations to come will be the losers. Teaching English poetry in India is definitely a challenge but an opportunity too. The major responsibility of the faculty is to facilitate the learner and bring them back to the benches.

The web is drawing everything in its web and teaching of English literature in not an exception. If we fail to do it the study will be a mechanized maneuver of downloads and the material success of the learners. ICTs are the part of the effective pedagogy and the careless application may make our learners the parasites. It is an opportunity for the teachers of the knowledge society of applying the technology to make the learner an independent learner. Let’s apply the internet and enhance the appreciation of the world’s great poetry and prove ourselves the new generation of teachers Dr Kalam (2012)the former Indian president now wants a new crop teachers, we need to teach responsibility and impart a value system to students. They need to be role models. They need to impress upon students the importance of purity of life and knowledge.
