3. Discussion/Research Assignment - 2 points
Research either Global Fishing Watch or SkyTruth, spend at least several hours - because these sites are BIG and the concepts very new. Tell me your thoughts in 100+ words in a PowerPoint or Google Slide presentation and upload it to your Assign08 folder (instead of Word – including screen captures and links). Do the OTHER for Extra Credit! Maybe you can even use these for another class, family discussion or other purpose. We are starting to combine and interact with large groups of people - the new products and ways to view information is really about to explode!
Global Fish Watch https://globalfishingwatch.org/map-and-data/ has great Interactive Maps. You can work with the interactive map to get an appreciation for how data can be integrated into a Tool to understand what is going on in our oceans. Fish are the primary source of protein for more than 1 billion people. A new initiative that uses machine learning to monitor the world’s fishing fleets could be a lifesaver.
Sky Truth https://skytruth.org/ is another site that takes the power of Google Maps and Satellite Imagery and AI to create a way of understanding issues.
3. Before & After:
From the PowerPoint or Slides reading/watching & research select 3 before & after examples that challenge you. Have each B+A example be several pages long explaining a concept from the videos.
REMEMBER at the end of each AFTER document - document what you changed! Upload
Create an Assign08 folder in your CompApp folder in Google Doc/Drive
Share it with JilMac.MacRand@gmail.com
From the Video Training
select 3 types of documents and demonstrate what you have learned, that challenged you, that made you think or that finally motivated you to try something new.
All documents in your Google Shared Drive folder should Automatically Share with JilMac since the folder they are in is shared. Test This in Workshop.

On the Handouts page View, Download and read the Computer_Apps_Assign09-14.doc
Internet Safety https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/internetsafety/ read through 1-14
Google Sites – is an application that lets you create Web Sites. The Web Site can have a Domain Name ($15 per year) associated with it. Web Sites are a way to organize your digital data and resources. It will last beyond your time in this Canvas class and at CCV. It is free to use and comes with a long list of other applications that Google gives us for free. They just ask – that we are Productive with them. Most can be easily accessible from the Google Web Site such as: Calendar, Documents, Sheets, Presentations, YouTube, Maps, etc.
Google gives you the ability to Create Web Sites that you can have a Domain Name Access. Think of a Domain Name as a License Plate for your car. The license plate is owned by you - you can move it from car to car - but you own it and you pay a fee for it each year. If you buy a new car - you move the plate from the old car to the new car and you update the department of motor vehicles.
Your Web site - is like your car - you can have many of them - but only 1 can use the license plate at a time.
Google has two types of Web sites that you can create: Sites & Classic. This site is Classes - it gives you more options and takes longer to create - JilMac uses it when she teacher Web Development. For Computer Applications we use just Sites - they are fast and easy and still give you tons of options.
Google Sites - from Support.Google.com From the right-navigation review: https://support.google.com/sites/answer/6372878?hl=en
How to use Google Sites
Create, name, or copy a site
Change how your site looks
Delete or restore your site
Find what's changed in a site
Compare classic Sites & new Sites
What you need to use Google Sites
Learn what's new in Google Sites
2. Research:
Google Sites give me 2 new tutorials about Google Sites (YouTube and/or a written tutorial). Create a Google Site – add an Assign09 web page. Put your 100 words for each tutorial on the Assign09 page – include what learned and links to where you learned them.
NOTE: Use the Advanced Search in Google – so that you can find tutorials that are CURRENT. Old tutorials can give you ideas, but Google changes and updates frequently – so you want to keep current. It saves time.
STEPS:
1. Search for your topic
2. Tabs under your search will be: All, Books, News, Videos, Images, More, Settings, TOOLS
3. Click TOOLS
4. Click Any Time down arrow
5. Past Year – should be enough.
JilMac’s Google CLASSIC sites videos, she uses these concepts when teaching Web Development. Students who want to go on to Web Development may find these interesting. https://sites.google.com/site/jilmactraining/collaboration/jilmac-google-videos shows you show to create a Google CLASSIC SITES – a way to ORGANIZING your Digital Data.
Extra Credit Opportunity:
Watch this TED YouTube video http://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability write up 100 words
it is about Vulnerability - you have to allow yourself to be Vulnerable in order to grow & learn. When you feel shame (I didn't read the chapter, I didn't do the assignment, I don't know how, I'm not smart enough ... blah blah blah - you ROB yourself of the opportunity to learn.
You have to have the Courage to be imperfect, then you will learn to FIX things.
You have to have the Courage to learn when there is NO Guarantee you will Get It in 15 weeks
3. Before & After:
1. Create a Google Site – Use the provided themes or create one of your own. Google allows you to make 20+ web sites, maybe even more! So if you want to create a different site than your research, you are free to.
2. Give me a link(s) to your Assign01-08
3. You can use your Assign01 Intro for an About Me page – since this is a REAL WEB Page – don’t include anything personal that you don’t want to share with the world.
Post the LINK to your WEB Site in Canvas.
Note: if you start to feel uncomfortable – call me! We can walk through this together. I want everyone to enjoy this assignment – it is very empowering!

watch/skim Microsoft Access 2013 (or the version of Access you have) training series: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Access-2013-training-courses-videos-and-tutorials-a4bd10ea-d5f4-40c5-8b37-d254561f8bce?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US
2. Research:
Research why Linked-IN is the Standard On-Line Resume site and how it is being used by Professionals. If you have not already created a Linked-IN account - do it now and search for Jil MacMenamin and CONNECT with Me. Can you search for People who work at a particular Company? How can you use this to research a company that you are interviewing for? Give me 200 words and 3 links to your research.
Note: If you are in a military/government/etc position - please make a generic account, and leave data blank. Having an account allows you to see information about companies, etc. So that when you leave the military/government/etc you will have the basic knowledge - because everyone leaves the military/government/etc and 98% still need employment. At that time you can create a real account. Because you will need to research companies you are applying to, unless it is more government/etc. If you have strong opinions - select an alternative assignment.
Post a LINK to your LinkedIN account on your Assign12 Web Page. Yes - from now on - each Assignment should have it's own page and not just a link to your Google Folder ... Because you are starting to learn how much richer a web page is than a folder ... you can get to information Quicker on a Web Page ... then opening and closing documents!! IF you make information EASY and QUICK to get to, people will use it rather than bug you and say "I can't find it". Think of your Boss or Family. If it is easy for them to get the infomation - they will. Because People are basically Efficient(I didn't want to use lazy, because lazy kind-of a way to be efficient LOL).
3. Before & After:
Do the Khan Academy "Hour of Code" for Databases https://www.khanacademy.org/computing/hour-of-code/hour-of-sql. Create a document of the SQL statements you used, just cut and paste them into a document comment what each group does in your own words. Give me 100 words (in the same document that you cut & pasted your SQL statements) what you learned about SQL.

EXTRA CREDIT Fun with Favicons
What is a Favicon??? It is a FAVorite-ICON, something that you associate a product or thing with a person, business, or organization. It could be the Nike Swish or JilMac’s Red Heart with a Cow in it.
Favicons appear on the TABS in your browser
Every Web Site puts a Logo in browser address bars, favorites & tabs.
At the top of your Browser (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer/Microsoft Edge, or Safari)
The example below shows Google Groups, Gmail, JilMac.com, http://google.com and http://www.cnn.com
A Google Search on “favicon generator” gives you a lot of choices: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=7&oq=favicons&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4ADBF_enUS236US238&q=favicons+generator
Each of the Favicon Generators does something a little different. Some create a Favicon and similar icons for all kinds of branding on your documents and web work.
Favicons help you know what browser TAB has what website displaying.

Research Graphic Editors with LAYERS
Everyone’s computer has some graphic editor. If you are using a Windows computer, you probably have Paint. If you are using a Mac, you may have Image Editor. But there are many more powerful image/picture/graphic editors that have LAYERS – photo editing, image enhancement, adding text or additional “things” to an image are important when you are creating documents – let’s research some products that can help you do the basics to images/pictures/graphs.
These could include: Google's Pixlar (there is a free version) Photoshop (what they ask for in Job Applications), Gimp(free-Open Source) or Paint.NET (free download) or others.
Create a Google Web page with your research about these three Graphic Editors with Layers.
and why Layers are important. 200+ words total and a reference link to each editor.
3. Before & After: Graphic Examples/3 Before & After - 3 points
Create a Web Page (or a Web Page and Sub Pages for each example) to demonstrate your 3 BEFORE & AFTER Graphics that you used to learn about Graphic Editors with LAYERS
NOTE: You can choose just 1 graphic editor with Layers, for all 3 of your B+A Graphics.
NOTE: I am NOT grading on the beauty of your image … I am grading on can you change it. Have fun, call if you want to work one-on-one, I still have days left open.
