Health & Social Life

This research project lies at the intersection of social psychology, sociology, and public health. Directly inspired by Durkheim's (1897) theory, we test the Berkman's conceptual model linking social integration to health (2000). This model suggests bridges between the macro level (government policy and socio-economic issues) and individual health. We are particularly focused upon variables such as level of social integration, social participation, social engagement, and volunteering.

Our work revolves around the role played by people's social engagement with regard to the quality of their individual life. It is now more and more obvious that people hardly survive to lonely conditions (Holt-Lunstad, 2010; 2015) - a fact to be reminded in our individualist societies. Therefore, this research leads to the possible implementation of social prescribing in mental health services in Belgium. This public health program developed in England seeks to refer patients with multimorbidity combined with mental health problems, low self-confidence, and social isolation to a voluntary activity. In doing so, the social prescription aims to reduce feelings of loneliness and limit health care consumption.
