Interoception

In this axis, we investigate novel ways of measuring interoception as well as explore possible relationships between interoceptive abilities and emotion processes. Interoception is broadly defined as the perception of internal bodily states, such as from the cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. It is hypothesized that interoception is crucial to identify our physiological and emotional needs and to act upon them in order to maintain physiological homeostasis and promote physical and mental health. For instance, it is hypothesized that alexithymia (a personality trait characterized by low emotional awereness) is related to lower interoceptive abilities.

The measurement of interoceptive abilities is, however, challenging. Our research group is devoted to the development of new and improved measures of interoceptive abilities across bodily systems, including the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and across dimensions (both objective performance and self-report based measurements). Further, with these newly developed measures, we aim to explore the correlates of interoceptive abilities and personality traits, emotional abilities, and physical and mental health in general.
