The United Sons and Daughters of Charity was established in 1873 as a local self-help benevolent organization to assist African-Americans during Civil War Reconstruction. The original lodge hall was built in 1873 and was one of the first public buildings constructed for African-Americans in Bolivar. Dues for participants were 25 cents per year which helped to defray the cost of funerals and burials for members. Over the subsequent decades, the building served as a school, church, meeting hall and community facility for other social events. When the original facility burned in the 1920's, the present building was erected. The Lodge Hall is the oldest African-American community building in Bolivar.
