The Gardens - 1871

The Gardens was designed by Fletcher Sloan for Francis Fentress in 1871. The architectural design is the Swiss chalet or Victorian that Sloan was so famous for promoting in his work. It is a two-story house with the front veranda and shaded with the trees native to the area. A brick walkway leads to the entrance. In 1914 it became the property of Woodson J. Savage, Sr. and his family.

In 1929, Mr. Savage bought the old iron fence of intricate design that had been erected around the courthouse lawn in 1870 at auction for $600 and had it erected around his property. It remains in place today to enhance the beauty of the house and grounds.
