The Bank - 1910

The Bank of Bolivar was organized in 1887, having only seventeen stockholders. The bank was started with $30,000 of capital stock. The original officers and directors were A.T. McNeal, President; W.C. Dorian, Cashier; D.E. Durret; W.A. Mercer; Sam Kahn; G.T. Ingram and Austin Miller, directors.

The first bank building was at the corner of East Market Street and Warren in what is now occupied by Danny's Barbershop. "The Bank on the Square" at 100 East Market Street was built in 1910 in the Neo-Federal style with four Corinthian crowned pilasters and gingerbread metal molding. It was remodeled in 1950 and in 1961 the McAnulty building next to the bank was purchased for the expansion of the main office. In May of 1979 the Bank of Bolivar constructed a new main office building on West Market Street in Bolivar.

In March 2007 a fire destroyed the buildings to the east of the bank and badly damaged the bank building. The current owner salvaged the facade and exterior walls and is considering several options for the buildings future.

The old Bolivar Bulletin newspaper building located at the corner of Market and Warren Streets housed the first Bank of Bolivar, built in 1887. Pictured in the dark suit was Hugh David Williams, owner and editor of the Bolivar Bulletin for more than 50 years. Now the building is Danny's Barbershop.
