Junior football title for Graignamanagh

The Junior Football team won the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Championship final in Johns Park on Saturday 28^th on a scoreline of 1.06 to Railyard 1.04

Graignamangh took on All-Footballing club Railyard in the Junior Football Championship last weekend in a blustery John’s Park in Kilkenny. On a day where the conditions had a big influence on the game, Graignamanagh took a 0-04 to 0-02 lead in a low scoring first half. Both sides spurned chances as defences were on top. Even the most optimistic of Graig fans at the game knew that Railyard held the advantage at half time as they were to play the second half with a gale-force wind in their back. Early in the second half, corner back Sean Ryan received a black card which introduced Neil Jordan into the game. It also led to a converted penalty which moved Railyard in front for the first time in the game. Goalkeeper Ian Kavanagh produced the moment of the game when saving from point blank range and tipping an effort onto the post and clear to safety. Graig battled hard and clawed their way back into the game matching point for point and staying within range of a first title since 2007. Sheamus Kavanagh popped up with ten minutes to go with a vital goal and edged our men back in front by two points, a lead which seen us over the line with some clever possession and great heart. Some notable performances were from Michael Bolger who kicked a number of vital frees in difficult conditions, James Meaney, Hugh Flood and Sean Dowling who marshalled a back line from the start, James Cahill in midfield who also left the field with some battle wounds and substitutes Padraig Whelan, Thomas O’Donnell and James Doyle who left their mark on the game and ensured a well-deserved victory.
