GameMaker Assessment

Task 1: Tutorials.

Follow the GameMaker tutorials to become familiar with the program and to build your skills. 5 simple tutorials have been provided for you to follow to create a maze game. These, plus your experience with GameSalad should give you a starting point so that you can begin to think about your game design.

MANY other tutorials, are linked as well. These provide specific information on how to achieve certain outcomes.

Fore example:

  • How to create power-ups
  • How to shoot in the direction your are facing
  • Monsters shoot in random directions
  • Collisions
  • etc

You should use these, and other you will find on YouTube, to create your game.

Task 2: Design Brief.

Your task is to take a classic 80's game and to create your individual version.

Choose a game such as Space Invaders, Asteroids, Donkey Kong or even Pong and design a unique version of that game. You need to stay true to the original and your game should not be unrecognizable.

Write a statement outlining what you hope to create.

  1. Research into a classic game and provide background information about the game designer, platform, popularity, impact upon gaming. The history of your classic game.
  2. Justify your choice of classic game. Why this game?
  3. Explain the back story of the game play. ie Mario is trying to save the Princess form Donkey Kong...
  4. Outline the object of the game. ie annihilate all the asteroids.
  5. Outline the design considerations. Character design, backgrounds, sound effects etc

To be completed on a word.doc and submitted to me by email.

Task 3: Create your game.

Complete the game and export as an .exe file. (Create an application).

Zip this file and email it to me and I will share them on my website for all student to play.

Task 4: Evaluation

Evaluate your game and reflect upon how you might improve the player's experience.

Play and evaluate games created by other students and provide feedback in terms of:

- Game-play

- Objectives

- Aesthetics

- Does it stay true to the original game.
