This area was settled by German farmers in the 1840's. Later, in the 1880's, Hungarians, Italians, and Jews from Poland and Russia settled here to work in the foundries or steel mills nearby. In October of 1856, the Cleveland City Council suggested building a market at the intersection of Ontario, Woodland, and Broadway. This became the Central Market and was one of Cleveland's oldest markets. Because of it's age and lack of sanitation, as well as being a safety hazard, it was declared inefficient by 1890. City Council was prepared to build a new market but before they could, the market was destroyed by fire. The tenants incorporated the New Central Market, Inc. This market leased the old Sheriff Street Market on E. 4th and Bolivar. It opened in 1950 but did not do well. This market was sold to the Domed Stadium Corporation in 1986 and when the domed stadium did not come to fruition, the building was torn down and the area became part of Gateway. Today this area is also home to Cuyahoga Community College, St. Vincent Hospital, the Boy Scouts of America. Other interesting buildings to note are the Central Baths and the Dunham Tavern located at 6709 Euclid Ave.
