Slavic Village was first settled by Polish and Czech immigrants. The Czech Karlin neighborhood is to the west and the Polish Warszawa neighborhood is on the east. The Poles began arriving in the 1880's and worked at the various steel mills in the area. Their parish was St. Stanislaus Church located at Forman Avenue and E. 65th Street. The Polish had a commercial district along Fleet Avenue and E. 71st St. There was also another commercial area located at E. 55th St. and Broadway. This was popular during the 1920's - 1940's. The Karlin Czech area was established about 1890 near E. 55th Street and Fleet Avenue. The original Czech settlers settled in the Flats beginning in the 1850's. The settlers who came in the 1870-1880 timeframe settled around Kingsbury Run. They finally ended up settling around E. 55th and Broadway and this was when Our Lady of Lourdes parish was founded in 1883. When Our Lady of Lourdes became over-populated, St. John Nepomucene Church was founded. There are many wonderful ethnic restaurants in this neighborhood and every August the Slavic Village Festival is held.
