The Bike Circle presides over the storage and use of bicycles in the community with the mission of supporting lower automobile dependency and healthy living. From time to time, and when a resident requests access to a specific parking location, the bike committee surveys interested bike users regarding frequency of use, ability to lift bikes (required by some locations), and allocate parking spots such that:
Users should not be asked to lift their bikes higher than they are comfortable lifting them.
Location preferences are honored according to frequency of use.
A user’s second, less frequently used, bike is allocated a lower demand location.
The Bike Circle can help residents donate their unwanted bicycles to a local charity such as CBGB (https://www.cambridgebikegiveback.org/), or Bikes not Bombs (https://bikesnotbombs.org/). (Bob Cowherd 2016)
Starting in the Fall of 2023, The Bike Circle decided to replace the current storage system in the common house bike storage room and the garage. This is being done for several reasons:
the original storage racks are difficult for some cyclists to use
we need room for more bikes
for security we need to lock our bikes more securely to a fixed structure
We have been investigating alternatives which require little or minimal lifting. These are described in minutes of Bike Circle meetings. (Dan Watt, 2024)
