The large basement room devoted to the workshop is under the East End stacked flats. It is kept secure with a combination lock. The workshop is accessed using the combination lock. The workshop is there for the use of all CCH adults. All equipment was either donated or is on loan. It is clearly an amateur shop, no equipment is industrial grade. The presence of a table saw and electric skill saws make the shop dangerous for children. A casual inspection will make clear that in its current arrangement, with the current crop of tools, it is clearly an adult-only domain. Adults lacking experience with stationary power tools like the table saw as well as some of the other powered tools are encouraged to await instruction. There are hand tools that offer less peril to the untrained and the occasional weekend sawdust maker. It is possible to leave your raw materials and your project-in-process stored in the workroom. No guarantees of preservation are made. Label your raw materials and your project to render it less likely to be accidentally used by someone else. (It has happened).
Keeping a complement of standard tools available for all is a challenge. Borrowing a tool for outside use is possible but discouraged. It is aggravating when there is no hammer!
The use of volatile organic solvents and finishes is strongly discouraged, as there is inadequate ventilation to dispel fumes. Also the fire danger is great with the use of organics (paint thinners, paint strippers, brush cleaners and all non-water based finishes and paints). A large exhaust fan will be installed at some time in the future.
Please clean up your own mess each time. Because residents live immediately above the shop and two offices function during business hours, the hours of use should respect their sound privacy.
