Tie Rod

The steering wheel (1) is connected to the steering column (2)

The steering column is connected to the steering rack via the universal joint (3). This is usually a spline shaft that you can slide in and out to allow for adjusting the steering wheeel angle on newer cars.

The outer tie rod (4) is conected to the knuckle (5). The connection is threaded and allows for adjusting the toe alignemnt

If the outer tie-rod is adjusted incorrectly:

  1. the wheels in the front will become slightly turned in (toe in), or

  2. the wheels in the front will become slightly turned out (toe out).
