Week 5 Math 9

May 4th - May 8th

Daily Estimation Activity

Learning Outcomes Being Addressed This Week:

By the end of the week, you (each student) should have a good understanding of how to do this list:

I CAN estimate based on real life benchmarks

I CAN build, draw and determine the surface area of composite 3D objects

Activity/Task #1: Review Rubric and watch Video Demonstration of how to use isometric dot paper.

Description of Activity or Task:

  1. VIDEO: Drawing Isometric Letters
    1. PLEASE NOTE: your drawings should be using RULERS/Straight edges!!
    2. Look at my example page to see the dimensions of the letters that you should be using do not use the sizing given in this video for how to draw them!!! DO NOT make your own sized letters (my calculation rubric is based on the sizes in this page)
      • The way the letter A is done in this video is NOT how you will be doing it.
    3. Pay attention to shading! Sides are darkest, top is slightly lighter, and faces are the lightest colour.
    4. Print a copy of the isometric dot paper to practice the letters while watching the video
  2. RUBRIC: Click Here
    1. There are multiple sets of calculations
      • Surface area, Volume and area of overlap if each side length of the cubes are 1cm
      • Surface area, Volume and area of overlap if the side lengths are doubled (next week)
      • Surface area, volume and area of overlap if the side lengths are tripled (next week)
    2. The expectation for Mastery Level is to create a single equation with multiple parts that will calculate the Total Surface Area for each letter. Think about how you will create this formula for this week so that you will be prepared to submit your final clean copy by the end of next week.

Estimate of Time Required: 45 minutes

Resources: You Tube, www.mrnannan.com, isometric dot paper, rubric

Demonstration of Learning: Students will submit a Rough Draft using Isometric Dot Paper by the end of this week (No calculations are due but it is a good idea to start them in order to be ready for submitting next week).

Activity/Task #2: Rough Draft of Name Project: Drawing

Description of Activity or Task:

After completing Task One, download isometric dot paper to draw each of the letters in your name

  1. Complete Rough draft of name or 5 letter word (minimum)
  2. Take a picture of the rough draft and submit in Google Classroom.

Estimate of Time Required: 45 minutes

Resources: www.mrnannan.com, google classroom, isometric dot paper

Demonstration of Learning: Students will draw their minimum 5 letter word (usually name) on isometric dot paper

Activity/Task #3: Rough Draft of Name Project: Calculations

Description of Activity or Task:

  1. Log in to Google Classroom and create a document titled rough draft calculations with your name
  2. Create a single equation WITHOUT NUMBERS that will allow you to find the surface area for any letter
    • Use this format to calculate the surface area for each of your letters (assume side lengths of each cube is 1cm by 1cm by 1cm (a one centimeter cube).
    • Find the total surface area for the word ***SHOW YOUR CALCULATIONS***
    • Find the total area of overlap for the word ***SHOW YOUR CALCULATIONS***
  3. Submit in Google Classroom

Estimate of Time Required: 45 minutes

Resources: www.mrnannan.com, google classroom

Demonstration of Learning Students will submit their rough draft of calculations through google classroom.
