Gelatin Prints

In this artwork there are many different subjects in some cases it could be a feather or rubber band, while other times it could be a cool texture made by the materials. As for setting there is not very much; however, in the modified print there is a small amount of setting being a farm. This artwork was made using a gelatin plate; black and blue printing ink; and many different objects such as feathers, streamers, rubber bands, different textured fabrics, etc. To create this I first laid down a piece of paper along with a sheet of glass to help with alignment, then I placed the gelatin plate down on top of that and rolled out some ink onto it, after I began to place the objects down onto the ink, and finally I placed a paper on top and rubbed it until I got a print; that is the initial print, I pulled that off along with the objects and got a another print; the "real" print, then after that I did one last print known as the ghost print. For the modified one, I waited for the print to dry then I took a fine marker and began to put in the little buildings and animals. Once I had done that, I started to color in the drawings. While making the prints I didn't think very much about the composition, I grabbed objects that look interesting and put them on. With the modified one all I did was noticed that the texture kind of looked like farmland and started from there, adding in different farm things until it looked modified enough. For composition rules and techniques I used color, texture, balance and contrast.

For composition rules and techniques that I unknowingly used in this artwork there is informal balance since most of the prints, even the modified one, are spread out not having a central composition. Also, in the modified print I used high horizon line making most of the farmland the central focus. Since I had no real plan when going into this project, my art was technically constantly evolving, for example if I saw something I liked on someone else's print I would grab the object and put it in my next print, or with the modified one if I saw an empty space I would add in a building/pond.

The meaning behind the artwork is that it introduced us to the different print making techniques, and also let us be a little creative/interpretive with the prints when we modified one. This project relates to my life because it reminded me of my "younger" years when I used to do these small doodles that were similar to the modified print. If I could revise my artwork I would add a little more to the farmland to give it more interest, and with the prints I would take more time to get a cleaner, more crisp print.
