Smallest country in South America, no bigger than Nevada. Formed part of NE Inca empire until 1533.

Tropical along coast and Amazon jungle, yet cool for Andes inland.

Frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity (Tungurahua Volcano, 74.5mi south of Quito, has recently started erupting).

Substancial Petroleum Resources. Language is Spanish. Indigenous language: Quechua and Shuar.

The United States dollar was formally adopted as the national currency in 2000.
