The learning targets:
Students will identify three instructional strategies for integrating music into a core classroom
Students will be able to describe at least one benefit of each strategy for integrating music into a core classroom
Students will be able to understand the possible downsides and struggles of incorporating music into a core classroom
There are many strategies for incorporating music in core classrooms.:
Just like it says in a way in (Richardson, T. (2017, April 28). One way you could do this is by finding a catchy song or tune and creating a way to incorporate that song into what you are teaching.
Another way you could include music in a core classroom is that while the students are doing their independent work, if they want to, you can put on non-lyrical music at a low volume as background noise.
Just like it says in (Nakamura, 2024), another reason why incorporating music can be a good idea is because if you can use it as a form of a brain break.
Examples of songs that can help with the memory of what you're teaching
For example, like it says in Roth (2021) one way you could use it in history is by finding a song of all the U.S. Presidents or a song about all of the 50 states.
Also, as stated in (Alegria, 2017), you can find a song about the skeletal system or the weather cycle for science.
Also, in my opinion, when you are teaching math, to help the students remember the times table.
Why you should care about this lesson!
In my opinion, the benefit of including a catchy song about what you are teaching is that, for most students, it will make that subject easier to remember.
In my opinion, incorporating background music in a core classroom can be highly beneficial because it helps students learn how to stay focused and productive, even in noisy or distracting environments. As noted by Provost (2023), research shows that for many students, background music can actually enhance concentration and support better engagement with their work.
Using background music as a form of a brain break can help re-energize students who are feeling tired or unmotivated. It provides a quick mental reset, helping them return to their work with renewed focus and enthusiasm.
As noted by Willis (2023), incorporating music as a reward can be an effective classroom management strategy. For example, allowing students to enjoy the last five minutes of class listening to music can serve as positive reinforcement for completing their work and staying focused throughout the lesson.
The disadvantages of incorporating music into a core classroom
Some students can not focus when there is background music or noise.
Teachers might have a hard time figuring out how to incorporate songs into their lesson plans.
