After completing this lesson, students will be able to...
Define a gifted student and the different attributes that they may have.
Explain the assessment process for determining a student to be gifted.
Describe the pros and cons of being considered a "gifted student".
This is Wolfgang Mozart. Mozart was considered a "child prodigy", which could also be defined as a gifted child, at the age of nine. He was gifted in music, as he could read any piece of music, improvise on any theme given to him, and name any note produced by music or sound (Melograni, 2006). Mozart, like many gifted children, experienced depression, anxiety, loss of energy, and excessive guilt (Hoermann, 2009). These are common mental health issues for gifted students.
This image was generated by ChatGPT. It represents a little boy who is gifted, and the different symbols behind him help describe what it is like to be gifted. The lightbulb, brain outline, and gear represent different ways of thinking, the Erlenmeyer flask and atom symbolize different ways of thinking in science, and the triangular protractor represents the giftedness in mathematics.
Interview with Alex and Lily
Alex and Lily are two gifted adults. I asked them to base their responses on what they can remember and how it affected them academically and emotionally.
In conclusion,
Gifted students face many obstacles.
Gifted students are a diverse group of learners whose strengths bring both opportunities and challenges. While advanced abilities allow them to explore subjects more deeply, they can also lead to stress, isolation, and inequities in identification. I believe this to be very true, as I have experienced this firsthand growing up. Although being gifted allowed me to have different learning opportunities, it also caused me stress and anxiety. Research demonstrates that a fair and comprehensive assessment process (Golle et al., 2023) and attention to psychological well-being (Cross, 1997) are both critical in supporting gifted learners. For educators, this means balancing high expectations with emotional support and ensuring that programs do not unintentionally exclude students from underrepresented backgrounds. By addressing these needs, schools can create environments where gifted students thrive both academically and personally.

How I used AI
I used ChatGPT and Canva as my AI tools for this assignment. I used ChatGPT to help summarize sources and make them easier to understand. I also used it to create images that would effectively represent Gifted students. Additionally, I used it to double-check my APA formatting and to enhance my writing, ultimately improving it. I used Canva to create my presentation slide shows. It allowed me to contain my information to one spot and make it easier for the reader to understand. I also used it to create the mini-quiz at the beginning. It allowed me to ask the question, write the answers, and select which answer was correct.
Using AI helped my process in many ways. It allowed me to get a different perspective on my writing as well as my presentations. It provided me with insight that I wouldn't have thought of without the help of AI. It also generated images that represented gifted students in a way that I was trying to write about. I believe it made the assignment somewhat longer, as it encouraged me to revise my work and add/delete things to my lesson. Even though it made it longer, I feel it made my work better. Using AI enhanced my lesson and provided support and ideas when needed.
Personally, I believe AI can be used to help someone more than it can be used to hurt. AI is a great tool to use in many different criteria and aspects of your life. When it comes to education, I believe I will use AI when helping to create assignments, assessments, or even communicate with parents. My policy is that I will use AI as a guideline to generate ideas. Additionally, I will introduce AI to my students, as I feel it is a great tool to use in the classroom; however, I will explain that it can not be abused and provide examples of ways to use it and ways not to use it. AI is used as a tool and a guideline for learning; however, it is not used to replace the concept of learning and thinking.
