Adding a Photo

INSERTING an IMAGE

Double Click a space on your webpage to activate the INSERT MENU shown here.

You can add JPGS, GIFS, PNGs or BMPS to your GoogleSite using any of the following methods:

  1. IMAGES - lets you add using a URL, a Google SEARCH, Your Google ALBUMS, or your Google DRIVE

  2. UPLOAD - lets you upload a file from your local drive

  3. FROM DRIVE - lets you access your Google DRIVE on the side panel to select an image file.

RESIZING the IMAGE

Once an image is on the screen, you can change it's formatting options

  • Use the RESIZE HANDLES to approximate the size you want in in COLUMNS on the website

  • Click the UNCROP button to restore the proper ASPECT RATIO to the image

ADDING A LINK to the FULL SIZED IMAGE

If you'd like to link the image to a FULL SIZED version,

  1. Store the file on your Google Drive (in an appropriate folder)

  2. Right Mouseclick on the file and SHARE it

  3. Right Mouseclick on the file and copy the SHAREABLE LINK

  4. Back on your Googlesite, select the image, click the LINK option and paste that Shareable link.

PHOTOSHOOT EXERCISE

Your objective is to produce and post an ideal PHOTO of yourself to the frontpage of your portfolio

STEP ONE: Take a picture

  • You can use your own camera, or a cell phone.

  • Consider the FORMAT of the photo (ie whitescreen, grayscreen, Medium Close-Up, Extreme Close-Up)

  • Consider adding CONTENT to the photo ("story" or context, props)

STEP TWO: Download it to your SERVER SPACE (P:)

A photo taken on your mobile device can be sent through WiFi from your cellphone to your account easily -

  • Send Photos to yourself through EMAIL from your device (SHARE) - then open up your desktop browser and DOWNLOAD the file - It should arrive in your P: Drive. Move it from there to an appropriate folder on your P: Drive and name it properly

  • ALTERNATIVELY - Install GOOGLE DRIVE on your mobile device, and you can SHARE photos to your Googledrive with just a couple of taps. Then on your desktop browser, download the file to your P: drive and name it appropriately - move it into an appropriate folder as well.

  • Photos sent from your phone likely need to be UNBLOCKED in order to be submitted through the HANDINS folder

STEP THREE: Upload it to your WEBSITE

You can add content to your webpages in two ways

  1. Double click on the page where you want to add your photo and select the UPLOAD button

  2. Look for the UPLOAD button on the right hand EDITING PANEL and click it there

Either way, you can then select your image from your P: drive and add it to the page.

Use this assignment to become familiar with the Design Process

RESEARCH

  • Figure out what looks good BEFORE you start taking pictures

  • Look at the cover photos of OTHER portfolios that you admire

    • What are the dimensions of those photos? How much of the screen did they cover?

    • What sort of COMPOSITION, LIGHTING, BACKGROUND and POSE did they use?

    • Determine the IDEAL size and ASPECT RATIO for the photo

  • Check your equipment - what settings are required?

PLAN

  • Find with a partner who can help you take the shot

  • Decide what equipment you might need - camera? tripod? lighting? reflector? What settings should be set on the camera?

  • Decide WHERE you want to take the photo - secure permission from your instructor, and plan how much time you'll need

PRODUCE

  • Get to the location and secure the shot

  • Try variations while you're there - with, without supplemental lighting? flash? alternate backgrounds

  • Return to the class asap

    • Upload the images

    • Process the images and choose the best

PRESENT/EVALUATE

  • Add the image to your portfolio!

  • Take a look at the work that other students managed to complete!
