Animation

Setting up Flash

Setting up your Flash Workspace

BEFORE you start animating, it's CRUCIAL that you establish a few "specifications" for your final product:

  • What should the STAGE SIZE be?

  • What shoud the FRAMERATE be?

Anything else (background colour, symbols) can be upgraded AFTER animating, but altering these two "specs" after starting animation can be disastrous.

1. Framerate

The default FRAMERATE should be 24 frames per second

Double click on that indicator to open up the settings dialogue

2. Dimensions

Use the MODIFY - DOCUMENT dropdown menu to adjust the size (resolution) of your stage.

The stage size that YOU should set depends on the size of the intended display ie:

  • Widescreen Displays & YouTube

    • 640x360 (this is a minimal, widescreen setting)

    • 800x450 (this is an ideal medium size for most websites)

    • 1280x720 for full 720p - though this is demanding on slower computers

Set your dimensions to 800x450 and click the MAKE DEFAULT button at the bottom left corner. From now on, your projects will start with this dimension all set up for you!

3. Publish Settings

Next go to FILE | PUBLISH SETTINGS

For EVERY project you do, you'll need to modify these settings to yield the best quality of image and sound.

  1. Click the FLASH tab in the middle

  2. Be sure you're using "Actionscript 2.0" (if not, you can change it here)

Be sure to correct the following:

  1. AUDIO SETTINGS:

    1. Click the SET button to change the Audio bitrate to 160kbps for both the "AUDIO STREAM" and "AUDIO EVENT" This will drastically improve the Audio Quality!

  2. HIDDEN LAYERS:

    1. Turn OFF "Include Hidden Layers" option to ensure that what you see while editing is what you get when you export your work.

Scrubbing

As you create animations in multiple frames of your timeline, you'll want to preview the motion easily. Click and Drag in the NUMERIC part of the timeline, and you'll see your animation previewed
